The biggest way to save a boatload of cash when you bring a new baby home should be a no-brainer. Breastfeeding. I’ve said before and i’ll say it again, i’m pro-formula, but if breastfeeding is something you’re willing to consider, give it a shot. You can save upwards of $2,000 a year by choosing not to formula feed.
When Holden was first born, our family was signed up for the WIC program. They provided us with milk, eggs, cheese, juice, and if Holden could have tolerated the type of formula they had- they would have helped us with baby formula as well.
WIC is a federal agency that provides food, nutrition counseling, and access to health services to low-income women, infants, and children.
They have just introduced a new food package that encourages breastfeeding. The new program, which is mandated for all states, reallocates funding for all currently provided foods, including infant formula, baby foods, juices, and fresh fruits and vegetables.
Now, obviously if you select the breastfeeding package, you will not receive any infant formula (but you do get tuna).
In Addition (and shocking to me), women who partially breastfeed or formula feed exclusively will receive 13 percent less formula than was afforded in previous years.
This means that parents who previously had most of their formula paid for by WIC may now have to purchase regular-formula on their own.
It seems to sort of defeat the purpose of WIC for formula feeding mommies when you are receiving much less help then before. Formula isn’t cheap. Any help is better then no help, but it can put a mean hurt on your wallet.
It’s important to know that there is NO difference in the quality of ‘name brand’ formula and store brand formula. They both go by the same FDA regulations, and the name brands are honestly no better than store brand.. so if you’re finding yourself in a pinch because of new WIC guidelines, you won’t be harming your child by buying MUCH less expensive store brands.. because they’re essentially the same exact thing! By choosing store brand instead of name brand, you can save approximately $600 a year, which is a lot of money when money plays a big factor in your life. And the only reason that store brand formula is cheaper than name brand is because they put a LOT less money into marketing- and with the still scary Similac recall in effect, it’s even more of a reason to go with a store brand formula.
You wouldn't sniff a stranger's butt to see who pooped their pants.... so you probably shouldn't do these other parental things to strangers, either. holdinholden.com/2017/12/weir…

You know that feeling when you don't chew a chip all the way and it cuts you all the way down and you swear it's gonna kill you, but you go ahead have another right after? That's what it's like when you decide to have another kid.
